When I was making my chest model, I said I noticed that the texture was distorted and warping on one side of the model when brought into Substance Painter, at the time I didnt know why. Now I am making another chess model, this time a pawn, and I once again noticed the texture warping. It was most noticeable on the sphere at the top of my model. I had my suspicions this time that it was because of the way I unwrapped my mesh.
As soon as I unwrapped it, I wasnt very happy with it. However I didn’t yet know how this would affect the texturing process though. So I proceeded to take the mesh into Substance Painter.
It is very easy to see from the two images above that there is a drastic difference between the front and back of my model. This I feel is due to the mesh being stretched as you can see from the UV unwrap.
My plan is to use more seams on my model, in the hope that the smaller and flatter the sections that are being unwrapped the less the stretching will happen. Of course I will need to be aware of the fact that the more seems I have, the less integrated my textures will look, as parts of the texture may not line up correctly. I need to find a happy balance between minimising stretching and not having my seams be noticeable after I have textured.
This is my UV after using two seems instead of one. I can still see that there will be stretching especially on the sphere. I’ve researched on the Blender forums looking for proposed ways to unwrap spheres and found two options:
My next plan of actions is to apply these ways of unwrapping to my mesh and see if my issues are solved.
